Film
Solino. By Fatih Akin, 2002
An Italian family that emigrates to the Ruhr region must find their way in their new home.
The Amato family leaves Solino, their village in Southern Italy, and moves into the dull Ruhr area of the 1960s. Between coal and steel mills the family opens the very first pizza restaurant of Duisburg: Mother Rosa sweats over the kitchen stoves, and father Romano flirts with the female guests. When the two sons, Gigi and Giancarlo, fall in love with the same girl, the once inseparable brothers turn into rivals. Luck means well with the dreamy Gigi, but Giancarlo begrudges his brother’s achievements in life. As time goes by, the family falls apart, while Gigi and Giancarlo continue to compete for love and success. Only after years of mutual disappointments the two brothers eventually meet again and have to ask themselves the question, who lived his lifein the right way.
