Concerts, workshops, meetings and discussions in Vietnam and two other Asian countries.

AB SYNDROM X LINHHAFORNOW: Extravagant Berlin beats and modern, avant-gardist Vietnamese music converge as the artists hit the road together for a tour of Southeast Asia. Both are already setting venues on fire in the music scenes in their respective home countries. As a musical novelty and in the spirit of cultural exchange, they are now uniting their unique musical styles, giving Southeast Asia an unforgettable musical experience as AB SYNDROM and LINH HA embark on their joint Vietnamese concert tour starting on 18 October 2019.

This is the eighth time already the Goethe Institute has invited a German-language band to Southeast Asia. After FOTOS, AUFBAU WEST, STABIL ELITE, GOLF, VON WEGEN LISBETH, DER RINGER and ISOLATION BERLIN, it is now time for the Berlin duo AB SYNDROM to come to Vietnam. As a special feature, Vietnamese artist LINH HA (FOR NOW) will accompany the duo on their tour of Vietnam. At every concert, AB SYNDROM and LINH HA will collaborate on a number of songs. In Hanoi and HCMS, the support act will be LINH HA’s duo project TINY GIANT.

The tour will kick off with a press conference on 19 October in Hanoi. The first concert on 20 October 2019 will be followed by three more gigs in Vietnam before AB SYNDROM moves on to Hong Kong and Manila. In addition to the musical performances, the Goethe Institute will host meet & greet zones at PASCH partner schools, universities, and Goethe Institutes, where German learners get to meet and talk to the musicians.

THE ARTISTS

The Berlin duo AB SYNDROM and its unusual beats have been rocking the German music scene since 2007, including their vocal chop hit "Flaggschiff". Their latest album PLASTIK is their third release. AB stands for Anton and Bennet, the names of the two musicians. With more than 1.5 million streams on Spotify and a constant presence on German radio (radioeins, Fritz, Deutschlandfunk, Nova), the duo earned their place in the more progressive sections of the German-speaking music world. Their second album HEY HERZ made the Radio Fritz "Sound of 2017" list. Percussion, electronic sounds, and intricate beats form the backdrop for frontman Bennet Seuß’s poetry. Anton Bruch and Bennet Seuß create all their sound effects live on stage. Take a listen and try to imagine the amount of talent required for such a performance (Campusradio Dresden).

Vietnamese artist LINHHAFOR NOW is an equally accomplished musician who uses her unique voice, a variety of percussion instruments, and a looper to create multidimensional soundscapes. Combining traditional Vietnamese vocal techniques, her personal lyrics, and a variety of other influences from pop to techno, BUI LINH HA concocts opulent, sonorous harmonies, sampled hissing noises, and peaceful lullabies into refined, impressive songs. As a live artist, she is also known for her national and international collaborations in Hanoi. Various international organizations (such as the FAMLAB by the British Council, Phu Sa Lab, and VCCA) support her talent and work, which not only expands her audience, but also exposes her to other cultures and impressions, which in turn enriches her art. This year, LINH HA is part of a German-Vietnamese artist exchange curated by Blind Signal. In July, her duo project TINY GIANT is set to release its first EP, including five songs in English, Vietnamese, and German.

RESS VOICES ON AB SYNDROM

With almost 2 million streams on Spotify and a solid amount of airplay, AB SYNDROM has earned its place in Germany’s avantgarde music world. (deutschFM, 2019)

These two men are Berlin, their music is Berlin, and now Berlin is AB Syndrome. With [their] song about the [subway line] U8, they have set a monument to the city. (Tagesspiegel, 2018)

And here, between all the swelling and ebbing synthesizer sounds and sophisticated grooves, listeners might even overcome their phobia of German as a pop music language. [...] The punny lyrics revolve around a world of love machinations (“Put your tactical blossoms back into their plastic bags!”) and metropolitan reveries (“We’re spitting down from the highest building in town”). (Music Express, 2018)

PRESS COMMENTS ON LINH HA & TINY GIANT

By blending chill-out music with looped vocal harmonies and traditional instruments, [LINH HA] creates an immersive, meditative sound. (Urbanist Hanoi, 2018)

Reaching deep into her soul, LINHHA (FOR NOW) transports audiences through wondrous, uplifting and reflective emotional moments. (Dao Xuan Chin Festival, 2019)

Over the delicate backdrop, full of soft and subtle electronics and a splash of laidback hip-hop beats, lies LINH HA’s featherweight vocal delivery which gives the track its melodic flow. (Twisted Soul, 2019)
