GERMAN AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE: MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE LEARNING GERMAN IN AFRICA AND ASIA
Interest in the German language continues unabated: As the survey "German as a Foreign Language Worldwide" shows, more than 15.4 million people worldwide are learning German. The instruments for promoting German as a foreign language are having a lasting effect. Europe still has the largest number of German learners, but German is gaining in importance in Africa and Asia in particular. The number of schools offering German lessons has grown from 95,000 in 2015 to around 106,000 schools. The language qualification of skilled workers from abroad is playing an increasingly important role in the promotion of German. Digital learning opportunities are enjoying growing popularity. The survey is published every five years by the Federal Foreign Office in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut, Deutsche Welle, the DAAD and the Central Agency for Schools Abroad (ZfA).
