“Mehmani” in Concert presents a musical evening that brings the intimate, community-rooted spirit of the “mehmani*” gatherings to a wider public. Emerging from a format created to empower Afghan women through cultural connection and shared experience, this concert offers a rare space where tradition and transformation meet.

The mehmani Ensemble, joined by celebrated artists Hadja Rastagar, Mariann Yar, and Siar Hashimi, invites the audience into a moment that evokes the feeling of a “khanagi*” – a home performance filled with warmth and intimacy.

The songs songs produced in the course of the mehmani project are shaped by personal memories and collective reflection. They show the struggle to preserve cultural identity amidst displacement and restriction, and the role of music in keeping heritage alive – not as a fixed relic, but as a living, breathing force shaped by those who carry it forward.

*khanagi: home-based performance
*mehmani: traditional Afghan home-based gathering
