Are you a German teacher interested in reflecting on your classroom practice and exploring new ideas?

CARP supports German teachers in taking a thoughtful look at their teaching, gaining fresh perspectives and developing their practice through guided inquiry.

Register now with a research question you’d like to explore.

What is CARP about?

Teachers regularly reflect on their lessons: What worked well? Where did learning stall? What would I like to try differently next time?

The Classroom Action Research Project builds on these everyday reflections and supports teachers in turning them into small‑scale, classroom‑based research projects. Participants develop a guiding research question — for example: “What will change in my teaching if I try …?” — and then explore this question through focused observation, documentation and reflection in their own classroom.

Throughout the project, participants receive expert support from the Goethe‑Institut, from refining the research question to planning and implementing the project and reflecting on the results. The project concludes with a shared exchange, where teachers present their findings, reflect together and learn from one another’s experiences.

CARP is primarily aimed at German teachers at Victorian state schools. Participants from these schools are asked to submit a research question that relates to the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM) 2.0. With the support of the Victorian Government, participating state school teachers in Victoria will receive an allowance of AUD 500 as a contribution towards the time and effort involved in the project.

Registration for Term 2 is now open until 27 April 2026.

German teachers from non-government schools and other Australian states: participation may be possible on request; please contact andrea.simmelbauer@goethe.de if you are interested.

Interested in experimenting with new ideas and sharing your findings?

Here are some sample questions from our 2025 CARP projects:
  • What happens in my lessons when students start each lesson with a short oral interaction exercise?
  • What impact does dedicating a significant portion of lesson time to student presentations have on learning outcomes?
  • What happens in my lessons when I deliberately incorporate space for choices and interests of the students into my workstations?

Documentation & Reports

As part of the Classroom Action Research Project (CARP), we document the results and experiences of participating teachers. These reports provide exciting insights into practice and show how small changes can have a big impact.
