Der österreichische Regisseur Georg Wilhelm Pabst (1885–1967) zählt zu den großen Visionären des frühen europäischen Films. Seine Meisterwerke aus der späten Stummfilmzeit und den Anfängen des Tonfilms beeindrucken bis heute durch ihre psychologische Tiefe und ihre präzisen gesellschaftlichen Analysen.
