Professional creative practitioners (18 years or older) from all cultural fields who are based in Ghana and have received an official (signed) invitation to attend a festival, event, conference, or residency within Ghana, the African continent, or Germany, and who do not receive any other financial support for travel tickets. Applications must be submitted individually, there will be no funding for groups.

What can I use the travel grant for?

The travel support is intended solely for the purchase of round-trip transportation tickets (air, sea, and land) to the festival, event, conference, or residency for which you have applied. When choosing means of travel, attention must be paid to and demonstrated for frugality, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability. For example, only economy-class tickets are eligible for subsidies for air travel. Applicants must have sufficient funds for all other travel expenses (e.g. accomodation, local transportation, meals, fees) Selected artists/cultural practitioners must advance the cost of purchasing the tickets. Please note: Please note that travel tickets already paid for at the time of application are excluded from funding.

What is the scope of the travel grant?

The travel support is intended solely for the purchase of round-trip transportation tickets (air, sea, and land) to the festival, event, conference, or residency for which you have applied. Private travel (e.g., by car) or travel with unofficial transport providers are excluded from the funding. Maximum subsidy of 600 EUR (or its Cedi equivalent) for international travel. Example: If the cost of a return ticket is 500 EUR, then a maximum of 500 EUR may be granted. If the cost of the ticket exceeds 600 EUR, then a maximum of 600 EUR may be granted. Maximum subsidy of 250 EUR (or its Cedi equivalent) for national travel. Example: If the cost of a return ticket is 200 EUR, then a maximum of 200 EUR may be granted. If the cost of the ticket exceeds 250 EUR, then a maximum of 250 EUR may be granted. Please note: The Cedi equivalent will be calculated based on the internal monthly exchange rate of the Goethe-Institut.

What are the eligibility and selection criteria?

Applicant must be a professional artist/cultural practitioner above 18 years Applicant must provide an official invitation from the hosting event/workshop/festival/residency/conference Applicant must prove that they play an active role in the programme of the event/workshop/festival/residency/conference (please indicate in the invitation) Usually, more applications are submitted than there are funds available. Selection criteria include: Motivation and expected impact of the trip Quality and relevance of the applicant's work to the event Quality and relevance of the programme of the event, festival, etc. Quality and relevance of the applicant's work to the event If possible: equal representation and participation of all genders Where applicable, sustainable means of transport are preferred

When and how will I be informed about the decision?

Decision is expected to be announced up to three weeks after the application is received. Applicants will be informed via email. Usually, more applications are submitted than there are funds available, and the Goethe-Institut is not obliged to explain the decision. There is no entitlement to funding.

What do I have to do after I received a travel grant?

Participants must submit a brief travel report and proof of actual travel costs by submitting receipts after the trip. If the travel subsidy exceeds the actual costs, the difference must be refunded. As part of the travel documentation process, participants are encouraged to provide material (e.g. video, text and/or text) that can be shared on Goethe-Institut's social media platforms.

The application must be submitted at least four weeks before the planned travel date. Usually, more applications are submitted than there are funds available. Once no more funds are available (or, for example, only domestic travel is available), we will announce it on this page. The latest possible application for the funding period until June 30, 2025, can be submitted by May 31, 2025.

Q: How many travel allowances will be granted by the deadline of June 30, 2025?

Up to six artists/cultural practicioners can be supported during this funding period. This depends on the applications and the availability of funds. Usually, more applications are submitted than there are funds available, and the Goethe-Institut is not obliged to explain the decision. There is no entitlement to funding. Once no more funds are available (or, for example, only domestic travel is available), we will announce it on this page.

MOVING GHANA is an initiative by the Goethe-Institut Ghana to support professional creative practitioners living and working in Ghana who are invited to attend a festival, event, biennale, conference, workshop or residency abroad, and seek support for their travels. The programme aims at supporting creative practitioners to enhance research, networking and showcasing their work to a wider audience.

To ensure timely processing, the application must be submitted at least four weeks before the planned travel date.
