As the digital world becomes more and more a part of everyone’s daily lives, it is critical for libraries to think more deeply about how they might become leaders in using their resources, digital and otherwise. By taking the lead, libraries will continue in their role as community hubs, providing essential services to community members.

The presentation of Dr. Hannelore Vogt focuses on the strategies and examples most vital to the success of public libraries. Library Director of Cologne Public Library discusses the factors such as - customer orientation, formation of community partnerships, successful advocacy, tailor-made information services, innovative web applications – for customers and staff alike - and the use of social networks for all ages. She talks about innovative services like the makerspace and the 3-D-printer, about events and activities for youngsters and seniors – like the geeks@cologne-series or a gaming zone for all ages.

But beside the digital developments library spaces and library design have to adapt to the changed needs and expectations of their visitors. The presentation also highlights the steps which Cologne Public Library has gone during the last few years and gives a glimpse of the future process. The presentation will be full of best practice examples.
