New Goethe-Institut film club for German learners in Hong Kong starts this July. On two Saturdays of each course term, we will present two successful German feature/documentary films, selected from our film archive, and invite the visitors to join the post-screening discussion. The film selection addresses current topics and facts. The films are shown in German, the original language, with English or Chinese subtitles.
To celebrate UEFA Euro 2016, we will show “The Miracle of Bern” (2003) by Sönke Wortmann for our first screening. The film connects a story of a father-son relationship after World War II with the true incidents around the German national team’s unexpected victory at the 1954 FIFA World Cup in Bern.
12 years after end of World War II, the father of Matthias, who has meanwhile turned 13 already, returns from the Russian war imprisonment to his family. He has problems to orient himself in his hometown and cannot understand the new lifestyle. The 13-year-old Matthias never knew his father because he was born during the wartime. He instead admires the national football player from Essen Helmut Rahn and sees him as a replacement for his missing father. After serious arguments at home, the father of Matthias decides to take him to the final match of the World Cup in Bern, where Helmut Rahn also plays in this important match.
