Workshop|German conservator Dirk Ferlmann visits Hong Kong for a workshop for other conservators, archivist and curators on the topic of exhibition care and maintenance for paper, leather and parchment objects.
In a first cooperation between the Goethe-Institut Hongkong and the Preservation Centre of the University of Hong Kong participants will have the opportunity to learn about exhibition care and maintenance for paper, leather and parchment object.
The following topics will be covered:
Exhibitions and transport of artefacts
Condition reports
Bookends, frames and mounting aids
Following the theoretical part, participants will have the opportunity to practically apply their newly gained knowledge. They will practice creating condition reports and bookends as well as fixed and temporary mounting for single sheets of paper. To finish the workshop the participants will visit a local exhibition and look at it with the newly acquired knowledge.

After an apprenticeship of the craft of bookbinding, Dirk Ferlmann studied Restauration and Conservation of Arts and Cultural Artifacts in the specialized area of Written Materials, Graphics and Book Paintings at Technische Hochschule Köln, the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne.
During and after the main studies Dirk Ferlmann participated in a number of exhibition care projects at different Museums, such as the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn, Museum of Applied Arts in Cologne, The Haus der Geschichte in Bonn, Suermondt Ludwig Museum in Aachen, Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin, and the Völkerkundemuseum in Munich.
In 1996 Dirk Ferlmann founded the Atelier for Paper Restauration. The clients of the Atelier come from different aspects – from various museums, insurance companies, archives and institutions to private individuals. The Atelier excels in the areas of papyrus-, paper-, parchment- and leather-restauration, and it has sound experience in logistics operation (Japan, Taiwan, Latvia etc). Since 2009, it has also taken up teaching duty for the Goethe-Institut and UNESCO (North Korea, Mongolia etc)
The Atelier belongs to the Workshop-community with the Group “Cologne for Paintings and Sculptures“ (Köln für Gemälde, Skulpturen, Frau Dipl.-Rest. Seuffert [www.gruppe-koeln.de]), and the Dipl.Rest. Restauratorinnenpartnerschaft Beier, Freund und Kühler (Textile, Wood, Metal, Glass, Ceramic, ethnological objects) in the Pasteur Street, Cologne.
