As the first collaboration between Goethe-Institut Hongkong and the Hong Kong International Literary Festival, we are happy to have Aisha Franz, an illustrator and comic author based in Berlin, to come to Hong Kong in November.
Aisha Franz: The Modern Graphic Novel
Date: 06.11.2018
Time: 20:30 – 21:30
Venue: F Hall, Tai Kwun
Fee: HK$100
Drawn in deep grey pencil, the intimate narratives of comic artist Aisha Franz reflect human longing within an oppressive reality. Her most recent work, Shit is Real, tells, with dreamlike surrealism, the story of a broken-hearted woman who becomes obsessed with her glamorous, absent neighbor. Her earlier work, Earthling, details the coming of age of two sisters as they confront their sexuality and the world’s expectations of women. Join Franz in a talk moderated by Mio Debnam about how her alienated female characters endure the waking nightmare of modern life.

In June 2017 the Hong Kong Arts Centre held its first comics exhibition “Let’s Play Ping Pong! Hong Kong Comics” in Berlin. During the exhibition, comic artists from Hong Kong carried out interesting exchange with local comic artists from Berlin. The exchange between the two cities goes on now when we have Aisha Franz in Hong Kong to talk with Bonnie Pang, a local comics artist. They will talk about their inspiration, creative process and the challenges they face in their respective home city.
