Opening: Thursday, November 8, 7:00 PM with an introduction by the artist.

“Walking along a building site, where the coast of Hong Kong has long been displaced through soil shipped in from Mainland China, I gaze at the continuous parallel lines of the omni-present red and white water filled plastic barriers. I recollect an online comment stating these oversized toy objects once had become steps for people to climb over concrete fencing along Harcourt Road.”

Antonia Low has an ongoing fascination with the materiality and construction of urban sites. Over the years she has documented construction-sites, barriers, fences and other public objects in the cities she has travelled to. She analyses the aesthetic properties of her findings and explores their possible meanings. Her research is then turned into visual objects, installations or constructed narratives.

As part of an artist residency with the Goethe-Institut Hongkong, Antonia Low continues her researches: In the dense and highly contested public space of Hong Kong, her exploration is focused on the diverse appearances of borders, barriers and other separative structures to explore their iconography, materiality and (immaterial) presence. Her interest lies in spatial reconstructions, and how memories as well as visions of the city both become imprinted in one’s mind and then superimposed on actual sites. In the exhibition space, these unfold as installation-like fictions.
