Conversations With Indian Women In Television and Radio

When we talk about women and media we inevitably talk about the representation of women. But what of the women who created media?
 
IAWRT is pleased to announce a six-part conversation series with women who shaped India’s media landscape in diverse ways – as part of national broadcasters Doordarshan and All India Radio or community media like Khabar Lahariya, Video Sewa and Deccan Development Society, as news anchors, TV and radio producers and pioneers.
 
The series begins on Monday, 25 January 2021 at 18:30 in a conversation with two pioneering women of broadcast television of the 1970s: Salma Sultan and Manju Singh.
 
Salma Sultan started her journey as a television announcer on Doordarshan and became an prominent news-caster before moving on to producing her own television shows. Her iconic presence on screen, featuring a rose behind her ear, along with her unique voice has been an important part of national media memories. Manju Singh, began her career as the anchor of a children’s show, Khel Khilone, and was popularly known as Manju didi, before she went on to produce path-breaking shows like Ek Kahani, based on regional short stories, expanding the horizon of Indian television media and the much-loved Showtheme, which brought the enjoyment of Bollywood more prominently into the sobriety of national TV. Both women in their own way were able to transcend the bounded imagination of a state driven approach to broadcasting.        
 
The conversation will be moderated by Paromita Vohra, filmmaker and writer and IAWRT Board member.
 
Please join us as they talk to us about how their work shaped the world of national television, and how that unique experience in turn, shaped their unusual journeys as women in the 1970s, and what it meant for the audiences that watched them.
