The exhibition series Sasa Nairobi is the basis of our work in the field of contemporary art. We aim at working with artists from Kenya that have an advanced and innovative approach and often commission them to produce new work. Since 2008, we have exhibited more than 40 artists, the last being a show by Jackie Karuti.

With the work in the exhibition The Bones Remember, Jim Chuchu has been exploring non-Christian spiritual rituals; their absence due to the unquestioned westernisation/Islamisation of the religious space and erasure of African spiritualities, and their purpose in contemporary African society in which global social inequalities and rapid capitalism have made Africans more and more materialistic.

The work consists of five videos detailing the proceedings of five re- imagined rituals, in which an initiate undergoes a symbolic individual and communal catharsis and (re)creates connections with the spirit world in the now - perhaps in an attempt to return health to a broken self/people.

A key question Jim Chuchu is trying to answer is: if African spirituality had been allowed to grow and evolve without imperial disruptions, what would it look, sound and feel like to be an adherent of a modern African spirituality?
