Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film, Video & Music Festival


The 9th edition of the international KLEX - Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film, Video & Music Festival is taking place at three different locations in the heart of Kuala Lumpur: RAW Art Space, Checkmate Creative and Live Fact.

This year the festival carries the topic TRANSLUCENCE as opposed to the clarity that our eyes and minds usually seek.

Three KLEX Open Programmes that were selected from 185 submissions to the open call will be showcased at this year’s festival. These programmes include contributions from Germany, Singapore and the Philippines. 50 experimental short films will be screened accompanied by 4 nights of experimental music performances featuring 37 local and international musicians from Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Lithuania, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan and more.

Sog
Dir: Jonathan Schwenk, 10 min, 2017
Stuck in the branches of a tree, a shoal of fish is in danger of drying out. Their screams for help wake up the inhabitants of a nearby cave who are less than happy about this unintended gathering.
 
Snack Bar
Dir: Christoph Eder, Jonas Eisenschmidt, 13 min, 2016
This documentary tells the story of a Greek family who runs a thriving snack bar that is frequented only by refugees who have just arrived from the war-torn areas of the Middle East.
 
Gabi
Dir: Michael Fetter Nathansky, 30 min, 2017
Floor tiler Gabi and her trainee Marco rehearse how Marco can split up with his girlfriend. Adapting this game to her own life, Gabi tries to fight against her inner emptiness.
 
ISLAND
Dir: Robert Löbel, Max Mörtl, 3 min, 2017
A short clip about a group of exotic creatures clashing on a small island.
 
Depth of Field

Dir: Mareike Bernien, Alexandra Gerbaulet, 14 min, 2017
This film examines three places in the German city of Nuremberg which are haunted by the memory of the racist murders committed there by the NSU far-right terrorist group between 2000 and 2005.
 
The satanic Thicket – THREE

Dir: Willy Hans, 22 min, 2017
On the first day of their holidays on the campsite, Mimi wants to make friends with the other children, Karl wants to go swimming, their father is hungry and their mother left the sandwiches at home. Suddenly, the caretaker’s rabbit goes missing. Only when the medieval tourists arrive the sense of order returns. One thing is for sure: the world is in turmoil.

Nicola L. Hein, born in 1988, is a German guitarist, composer, philosopher and sound artist. In his work, he is aiming to incorporate philosophical ideas into music and sound art and thereby finding his own language and way of expression. During KLEX he will be preforming with Viola Yip from Hong Kong who is a New York-based composer and performer.
