A group of German construction workers begin to build a hydroelectric power station in a remote area in Bulgaria. Even though the relationships to the inhabitants of a village close by are difficult – not least because of the initially hardly conquerable language barriers – Meinhard manages to build friendships with the locals; his colleague Vincent watches the approaches with jealous mistrust. With WESTERN Valeska Griesebach tells the story of guest workers abroad with reversed conditions: here the Germans are the foreigners, and overcoming the barriers isn’t easier for them than for guest workers who come to Germany.
