Angelika Niescier, one of Germany’s finest saxophone players, is returning to Malaysia for a research visit. During her stay she will join Serious Play Improv Lab (SPIL), a monthly improvised and experimental music series run by KLEX Festival at RAW Art Space, featuring Max Riefer (percussion), Kok Siew-Wai (vocals) and Yong Yandsen (tenor sax). Another concert will take place with local improvised saxophonist Yong Yandsen as a duo at The Saxophone Store, organized by LaoBan series, a new local record label that focuses on releasing improvised music in South East Asia and beyond.

Angelika Niescier: The Cologne saxophonist and jazz musician was born in Poland in 1970 but lives in Germany since 1980. After studying at the Folkwanghochschule in Essen, Germany, Angelika Niescier went on tour worldwide and was part of many diverse productions. Her free, expressive improvisations are unique, which is why she became one of the most important female players in the contemporary jazz scene. In 2017, she was awarded the prestigious Albert-Mangelsdorff-Prize in Berlin. In 2015, Angelika Niescier came to Malaysia for the first time as a guest of the Goethe-Institut in order to play with her trio at the Penang Island Jazz Festival and also with local musicians.

Max Riefer, "Director of Percussion Studies" at Universiti Teknologi Mara Faculty of Music and coach of the new music ensemble “Opus Novus” at the YST Conservatory/ Singapore, has performed as soloist and chamber musician at international festivals like MaerzMusik (Berlin), Tokyo Experimental Festival, Vienna Modern, Soundbridge (Malaysia) amongst others. He was a guest lecturer at the Birmingham Conservatoire (UK), the Conservatory of Music Lugano (Switzerland), Tokyo Ongaku Daigaku (Japan) and Mannheim University of Music (Germany). He studied at the Freiburg Music University and at the Toho Gakuen Orchestra Academy (Japan).

Kok Siew-Wai is an artist-organizer, vocal improviser and video artist from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She has shown her works and performed in Asia, Europe, Canada and USA, participating in music festivals such as CTM Festival (Germany), allEars Improvised Music Festival (Norway), Asian Meeting Festival (Japan), Singapore Night Festival, Choppa Experimental and Improvised Music Festival (Singapore), Nusasonic (Indonesia), amongst others. Her vocal performance + text video piece “Language of Self”, is collected by the He Xiangning Art Museum in Shenzhen, China.

Yong Yandsen is an improvised saxophonist. He has played at the Asian Meeting Festival (Japan), Mosaic Festival Singapore, Choppa Eclectic Improvised Music Festival (Singapore), allEars Festival (Norway), Music Matters Festival (Sri Lanka) amongst others. Yandsen, together with Darren Moore and Brian O’Reily, form the improvised trio called Game of Patience. They have toured widely through Asia. In 2018, he joined another trio with Christian Meaas Svendsen and Paal Nilssen-Love. Yandsen has also done several solo tours to Japan and Taiwan. He is the co-founder of a Malaysian record label, LaoBan Records, focusing on releasing contemporary improvised music.
