Equal opportunities in science

The Science Film Festival is a celebration of science communication in Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.
In cooperation with local partners it promotes science literacy and facilitates awareness of contemporary scientific, technological and environmental issues through international films with accompanying educational activities.
The event has grown considerably since its first edition in 2005, becoming the largest event of its kind worldwide. In Malaysia we celebrate the 12th anniversary of the Science Film Festival.

The theme of Science Film Festival this year is Equal Opportunities in Science. The festival this year is committed to increasing the awareness on the issue of diversity and inclusiveness in STEM from underrepresented groups, in which studying and working in science is open to all and for the benefit of all sections of society.

For Malaysia, the festival this year includes a total of 63 films chosen by a panel of Malaysian jury members and during the festival period 01 October to 20 December 2022, the films will be available for free on VIMEO which can be streamed non-commercially in schools, universities and other educational venues nationwide. If you are interested to access the films, kindly register here.

As part of the tradition, the opening ceremony will be held on the 16 November at the Dadi Cinema in Pavilion Mall Kuala Lumpur. This year the festival will return with a hybrid format scheduled to take place in several cities nationwide with planned activities include film screenings, virtual quiz competition and science workshops to students of all levels from the primary schools to university graduates.

The Malaysian partners are the Malaysian Ministry of Education (MOE), Association of Science, Technology and Innovation (ASTI), Pusat Kokurikulum Negeri Terengganu (PKNT), Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO), Malaysian German Educators Association (MDLV), University Malaysia (UM), SEAMEO STEM-ED, Ecocentric Transitions, Alliance Francaise Kuala Lumpur, Embassy of France in Kuala Lumpur, the Educational Cooperation Programme (BKD), The Schools: Partners for the Future (PASCH) and our new partner Rolls-Royce.
