The Gewandhaus under Totalitarian Regimes, 1933-1989

A conversation with Christoph Wolff, Jeremy Eichler and Jonathan Yaeger

Join Harvard Professor Emeritus Christoph Wolff, author and critic Jeremy Eichler, and author and Juilliard musicologist Jonathan Yaeger for an exploration of the Gewandhaus Orchestra under two different music directors – Bruno Walter and Kurt Masur – who struggled under totalitarian regimes in Leipzig.  The evening will begin with a performance by BSO bassists Carl Anderson and Benjamin Levy, with pianist Anna Carr, performing music by Dmitri Shostakovich, followed by short scholarly talks and a panel discussion.

Effective January 15, in accordance with the City of Boston’s vaccine requirement, visitors must present proof of full vaccination each time they enter the Goethe-Institut Boston. We are no longer able to accept a negative COVID-19 test in place of proof of vaccination for visitors. Options for proof of vaccination include showing a vaccination card, a photo of the card, or a digital vaccine record. Masks must be owrn at all times during all indoor public events.
