Sergei Prokofiev
Symphony No. 5 in B flar major, op. 100

In the first half of the program, one experiences a key work of French Impressionism: La Mer by Claude Debussy. The score reflects in all imaginable orchestral colors the impressions of nature that Debussy had collected during a holiday on the English side of the English Channel.

Juxtaposed are Debussy's dazzling timbres in a composition that is committed to the aesthetic maxims of so-called "Socialist Realism": Sergei Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony, launched in Moscow on 13 January 1945With his Fifth Symphony, the composer himself wanted to intonate a "song on the free and happy man, his creative powers, his nobility, his inner purity".
