GUARANTEED ENLIGHTENMENT: DORIS DÖRRIE FILMS

Goethe-Institut Los Angeles

Written and Directed by:
Doris Dörrie, Germany (1985), 100 min., German with English Subtitles, digital. Starring: Heiner Lauterbach, Uwe Ochsenknecht, Ulrike Kriener

Designer Julius (Lauterbach) seems to have everything a Yuppie could wish for: a successful career, money, his wife Paula (Kriener), and of course, his affair with his secretary. When he discovers that Paula has been sleeping with an unemployed freelance graphic artist named Stefan, Julius’ world, and his marriage, falls apart.  For Julius, the two men couldn’t be more different.

In an attempt to learn more about his wife’s lover, Julius pretends to leave town, but instead, secretly keeps an eye on the couple, looking for answers. When Stefan throws his old girlfriend out of their apartment, Julius applies for the vacant room and an unsuspecting Stefan accepts his new roommate. As the two men quickly become friends, Julius realizes that they have more in common than he had originally thought.

A box office hit in Germany and abroad, Dörrie’s off-beat, yet poignant romantic comedy was a break-out success for the screenwriter and director. MÄNNER won 3 German Film Awards (Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Acting) and was Germany’s official submission for Best Foreign Language Film for the 59th Academy Awards.
