Closing Party
Closing Party: Queer As German Folk

Finnissage: Queer as German Folk
Sarah Blesener

Goethe-Institut New York

Join us for the closing party of Queer as German Folk, an exhibition honoring 50 years of activist exchange between North American & German queer communities! Hosted by legendary drag queen Linda Simpson, the evening will feature a raffle and queer trivia! Prizes include a free language course, tickets to an upcoming queer theatrical production at St. Ann’s Warehouse, and more!

Curated by Birgit Bosold and Carina Klugbauer of the Schwules Museum, the core of the exhibition includes 100 items that capture moments in queer movements that caused shockwaves both big and small, from early leather meeting places in Kreuzberg to the feminist scene in East Germany; from the legendary Tuntenstreit of leftist gays to the so-called Witch Trial of Itzehoe; from the founding of the Network of Black Women in Germany to today's trans demonstrations. The exhibition includes clips of queer activists describing their "Stonewall Moments", highlighting both the relevance of queer history and the urgency of today's struggle.

The closing party is free and open to the public.

Since the late 1980s, Linda Simpson has been one of New York's most multi-faceted drag queens. Her career includes promoting and hosting dozens of parties at NYC clubs and bars; publishing the underground "revolutionary gay magazine" My Comrade; hosting the groundbreaking nationally broadcast cable TV show Party Talk; writing, producing and starring in four plays (at P.S. 122, La Mama and the Laurie Beechman). Over the past several years, her wildly popular bingos have entertained throngs of players. One of Linda's most acclaimed projects is The Drag Explosion, featuring her photos of New York's momentous drag scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The multi-media undertaking includes a website (TheDragExplosion.com) and a slideshow that she has presented in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Copenhagen.
