Family Fever
Director: Nico Sommer, Writer: Daniel Fink Germany, 2013, 77 min. In German with English subtitles, digital. Starring: Peter Trabner, Kathrin Waligura, Deborah Kaufmann, Jörg Witte, Anais Urban, Jan Amazigh Sid
For Maja (Waligura) and Uwe (Trabner), marriage has become a monotonous rut of their individual routines.
In contrast, their daughter Alina (Roth) has fallen madly in love with the well-to-do Nico Ohnsorg (Sid) and can’t wait to introduce her parents to Nico’s mother, Birgit (Kaufmann) and his father, Stefan (Witte). Poorly prepared for the surprise family dinner Alina has arranged, Maja and Uwe head off with their daughter to the Ohnsorg estate in the countryside outside of Berlin. What awaits them all is a series of set-backs and mishaps, as well as revelations and surprises.
With only a four page script, a shoestring budget, and a seven day shoot, Nico Sommer’s second feature offers an endearingly tragic-comic insider’s view into the inner workings of two very different families.
