An art in public project

A public space is a space that does not belong to anyone, but at the same time, to all. It is a site that doesn’t just hold its inhabitants’ history and memory, but also reflects their personal and collective identity. It is a place that is often neglected or forgotten, but has the potential to become a zone for creativity and freedom.

“Into Thin Air” is a long-term art in public project, initiated and curated by Manzi Art Space with a view to building awareness and appreciation for art, particularly contemporary art, among the public to help artists develop their independent practices whilst encouraging their involvement in social development within the current context of Vietnam.

The first edition of Into Thin Air took place from 09 to 19 April 2016 in Hanoi.

In October 2018, Into Thin Air 2 will be launched in Hanoi with 10 works:
  • 2 contemporary dance pieces in 2 public spaces – Ô Quan Chưởng Gate & Ba Kieu Temple
  • 2 video art works in the Botanical Garden of Hanoi and in Thuong Dinh New market
  • 3 soundwalks at Ba Dinh Square, Mai Dich Living Quarter & Nam Dong Living Quarter
  • 3 virtual installations in Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square & in Lenin Park & Hom market
This 2nd edition encourages the freedom of cultural expressions and enables an environment that encourages individuals and socials to get access to and enjoy a wide range of cultural activities.
‘Into thin air’ 2nd edition expects to attract an audience of around 100,000 people and will be available online for at least 5 years.

The project is made possible thanks to: UNESCO Vietnam, Goethe-Institut Vietnam, Embassy of Netherlands in Vietnam and ADT company.
