Ses’fikile - Siwu Mndeni - Celebration, film premiere and photography exhibition presented by Jabulile Newman at Club Zer021 in District Six, Cape Town

Ses’fikile - Siwu Mndeni was an all-night celebration, including the premiere of a short film, photography exhibition, live performances, installations and DJ sets. The event was a celebration of safe and inclusive queer spaces that currently exist in the Cape Town metropolitan area. Hosted by Club Zer021, a queer-friendly night club based in Canterbury Street in the District Six area of Cape Town, it was attended by members of a very diverse community, representing all classes, races, ethnicities and genders present in the Cape Town metropolitan area.

The short film, directed by Jabulile Newman & Luvuyo Equiano Nyawose, is a combination of documentary and pop video. It features the song Queenie, performed by FAKA, and produced by Angel-Ho. The film explores the representation in mass media of queer and transgender bodies of colour, and was shot in Jabulile Newman’s grandmother’s home. The film was met with enormous enthusiasm by the crowd at the event, and was followed by appearances by FAKA and Angel-Ho, from where the capacity crowd celebrated into the light of a new day. After the event, the film was distributed widely through social media.
