Scholars of 2023

The Friends of Goethe Australia Scholarship was awarded to 2 young professionals in mid-2023.

Isabella Alvarades was given the opportunity to conduct a work and research placement at an architecture firm called Baukind with a focus on designing progressive early learning environments for children under the age of 6.

Andy Butler was given the opportunity to conduct a research residency at the Humboldt Forum in Berlin.

Both share their impressions and experiences below.

Architecture and Design for Early Childhood Education
Isabella Alvarado

Isabella Alvaradois an Architectural Graduate working in Melbourne, Australia. Her current work focuses on education design and community projects. Her portfolio includes Early education design, Primary Schools, Secondary schools and Community Centres.

Since graduation, she has been an active sessional tutor at Monash University teaching foundation year studios, the combination of designing teaching spaces and teaching design has encouraged an interest in pedagogies concerned with creativity, play, exploration and care.

Curatorial Residency at the Humboldt Forum
Andy Butler

Andy Butler is an independent curator, writer and artist. His writing has been published to wide acclaim, in outlets includingfrieze,The Saturday Paper,Art+ Australiaand more. He was previously the curator and Artistic Director at West Space, Melbourne.

He has delivered workshops, talks and mentorship programs with institutions including the National Gallery of Australia, ACCA, QAGOMA and the National Gallery of Victoria. In 2022 he was the recipient of the Parramatta Artist Studios x Powerhouse residency, to research elements of the Powerhouse Asian Art collection.
