Romana Schmalisch (1974, Berlin) is an artist and filmmaker. Robert Schlicht (1975, Berlin) studied philosophy at Humboldt University Berlin and is an author and filmmaker. They have been collaborating in numerous projects at the interface of film, theory, and art. Labour Power Plant is their first feature film.
As part of the exhibition Smile! Emotions at Work, German artists Romana Schmalisch and Robert Schlicht present a video installation entitled Top/Down and their feature film Labour Power Plant. In these two films, the artists create a fictional training institute where people are trained to become perfect workers.

Smile! Emotions at work
Curators: Anne-Marie St-Jean Aubre and Maud Jacquin
Exhibition: From October 2, 2021 to January 9, 2022
This group exhibition of artists* from Québec, Canada and abroad addresses the role and nature of emotions in the workplace and more generally in our capitalist technological culture. The project is divided into two parts, one dedicated to the emotions evoked by contemporary changes in the workplace, and the other to the emotions that are literally infused into work. These two major sections of the exhibition are structured around the following questions: What impact do changes in the marketplace and working conditions have on workers' bodies, gestures, emotions, and behaviors? How are emotions processed and commodified in a service economy where workers' ability to manage their emotions (what we call emotional labor) plays an important role and where technology is used to turn what we feel into usable capital?
