Press Releases 10 November 2020 Berlinale Selection 2020 A German film screening series by the Goethe-Institut Cyprus With the Berlinale Selection 2020, taking place from 14 to 22 November, the Goethe-Institut Cyprus is continuing a film series taking place every autumn and presenting a selection of the best new German language films from the most prestigious German film festival – the Berlinale. The film series gives the opportunity to audiences in Cyprus to get to know the best works in German contemporary cinema that offer an insight into social issues through the medium of film. 13 October 2020 “Disappearing Wall”: A European Project of the Goethe-Institut Travels to Cyprus The interactive wall installation "Disappearing Wall" combines quotes from European high and pop culture to demonstrate Europe’s diversity. From summer 2020, the striking installations can be seen in ten European countries. In Cyprus the "Disappearing Wall" will be shown on 24 and 25 October 2020 at the Faneromeni Square in Nicosia and on 7 and 8 November 2020 at the Molos seafront in Limassol. 17 September 2020 Late Summer Cinema in the Goethe-Institut Garden The Goethe-Institut celebrates Oscar winning German director Caroline Link with a film series. On four consecutive days, from 22nd until 25th September 2020, the Goethe-Institut Cyprus will present in its garden films by one of Germany's most renowned and popular directors: Caroline Link. 2 July 2020 Kurz.Film.Tour A short film programme from Germany at FilmRaumGoethe and on your couch at home. Short films are exciting, innovative, entertaining and full of surprises. After Short Export, the Goethe-Institut Cyprus presents Kurz.Film.Tour, a different selection of short films that have been nominated or awarded the German Short Film Award. The programme will be presented on 14 and 22 July 2020 both at the Goethe-Institut in Nicosia and online. 1 July 2020 Earth Speakr Kids take over Earth Speakr, an interactive artwork started by Olafur Eliasson Earth Speakr is a new interactive artwork by artist Olafur Eliasson that amplifies kids’ views on the future wellbeing of the planet. The artwork invites adults and today’s decision-makers, change-makers, and global leaders to listen up to what kids have to say. Earth Speakr uses augmented reality and includes a free app and an interactive website available in the 24 official languages of the European Union. Eliasson created the artwork on the occasion of the German Presidency of the Council of the EU 2020. 16 June 2020 #GoetheForEurope EU 2020: the Goethe-Institut’s European commitment to German EU council presidency The Federal Republic of Germany will take on the EU Council Presidency on 1 July and initiate a European cultural programme with the focus on the European public sphere and European solidarity. The Goethe-Institut’s contribution to the cultural programme of the Federal government focuses on the questions: What will constitute Europe going forward and how can Europeans achieve cohesion even in the time of the coronavirus? The Goethe-Institut’s Europe-wide discourse and art projects are dedicated to the diversity of Europe and the creation of a common European public sphere – whether through a generational dialogue about Europe, in debates about the influence of artificial intelligence, or about the state of freedom, by developing climate-neutral travel schemes, or eye-catching installations in European cities. 28 May 2020 Getting Across An exhibition on borders 11 June – 1 August 2020, NiMAC NiMAC (The Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre, Associated with the Pierides Foundation) and Goethe-Institut Cyprus organise and present the exhibition Getting Across at NiMAC from 11 June to 1 August 2020. The exhibition addresses the crucial issues of migration, crossings and borders and showcases works by important artists across international borders, from a cross section of cultures and different historical situations. 10 February 2020 KunstRaumGoethe New event series by the Goethe-Institut Cyprus KunstRaumGoethe is the event-space and new event-series of the Goethe-Institut Cyprus, which hosts exhibitions of artists and curators of contemporary art, who are connected to Germany and Cyprus in different ways and/or deal with this in their work. Two exhibitions will be hosted from the end of February until the end of March 2020: Buch der Gezeiten (Book of tides) by the German artist Horst Weierstall and Temporal Inconsistencies / Head and hand series by the Cypriot artist Kyriaki Costa. The opening of the exhibitions will take place on 27 February 2020 at the event hall of the Goethe-Institut. 4 February 2020 Influential German choreographers on film German dance film screening series Through a dance film screening series the Goethe-Institut Cyprus presents four of the most influential and internationally recognized German choreographers: Mary Wigman, Kurt Jooss, Pina Bausch and Sasha Waltz. Four movies will be screened between 13 and 19 February 2020 at Egomio Cultural Centre, shedding light on the life and work of the four dance legends.
