Don’t Cross the Line

An exhibition on borders

The Goethe-Institut has been addressing questions relating to migration, displacement and borders in its cultural programme work for a long time. This is by no means a new theme; it is as old as humanity itself, although the roles are changing. The debates and discussions about displacement and migration have increased since Autumn 2015 and have, in Europe at least, resulted in political changes. Nationalistic feeling has been allowed to become a decisive factor in elections again, despite the belief that this had been overcome long ago. Newcomers are cast as a threat to the existing ‘cultural identity’ – which cannot even be defined – and security, on a scale you would scarcely believe possible. And yet migration is a part of human history. Movements across continents, invasion, colonization, subjugation of people under foreign rule, resistance against intruders, construction of walls, fortification of borders, hybridization of identities, emergence of a new population – all this is related to migration. Migration means not only the migration of people, but also the migration of knowledge, skills, values and new ways of looking at the world. It is about contrasts, cohesion and bridges, suffering and unpredictable opportunities, abominable violence and new alliances, coalitions and even friendships.

Curated by Leonhard Emmerling and Kanika Kuthiala in New Delhi, the exhibition getting across takes up the theme of migration in multiple ways. International journalists, photographers and artists reflect in their contributions the motif of crossing borders. The changed global-political situation thus gives rise to new interpretations. The exhibition is a touring exhibition of the Goethe Institut. For the duration of the exhibition in Cyprus, three Cypriot positions were added, curated by Yiannis Toumazis, artistic director of the NiMAC.

In cooperation with the NiMAC the exhibition can be seen from 11 June to 1 August 2020 at the NiMAC (Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre).
