Over six episodes, the film provides insight into the joint life of the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig (Josef Hader) and his wife Lotte. The family is Jewish and on the run from Nazi persecution during the Second World War. Between 1936 and 1942 they find themselves in different countries on all continents and experience the different cultures – but although they are shown a lot of hospitality, the couple is not happy and comes to a serious decision.
