In a depressed city in eastern Germany, Christian and Katrin are close friends with Uwe and Ellen, and the two couples struggle to stay financially afloat. Out of boredom as much as anything else, Christian and Ellen begin an affair that brightens up their dull lives for a time. After Katrin catches them together, though, the four must reassess the nature of their marriages and their friendships.
