Film biography about the turbulant life of the GDR singer-songwriter Gerhard Gundermann (1955-1998). By day, he works as an excavator driver in open-pit lignite mining in the German Lausitz. But by night, after his shift, he takes to the stage as a singer and moves people with his music. He addresses matters such as life, death and dying, but also takes up political and socially critical topics. His personal and authentic songs made him an idol of many people in the GDR during the 1980s. At the same time, he repeatedly came into conflict with the authorities. Even after the end of the GDR, Gundermann did not lose his popularity. Until the rumor starts to spread: Was he a spy for the Stasi?
