The Goethe-Institut Cyprus presents its upcoming open-air film series, titled Sommerkino: Between Waves. This year’s film series is dedicated to water in many forms: as a physical force, a border, a refuge, a threat, a memory. The programme invites audiences to follow these different cinematic streams, to feel how water can shape lives, and to reflect on the fluidity of identity, belonging, and change. Between Waves concludes with the film Afire by award-winning German film director Christian Petzold.

In his film, Afire, Christian Petzold brings four young people together in a holiday home by the Baltic Sea in the summer. Through these four young people, Leon, Felix, Nadja and Devid, sharing this holiday home, a story about self-reflection, understanding each other and oneself, against the background of the climate crisis, is told. The parched forest near the holiday home begins to blaze, it rains ash, and the sky turns red. With this, their emotions ignite. A film filled with symbolism and realism.

The film premiered in the Competition 2023 Section of the Berlinale.
