A film about love, dementia and reconciliation

The Goethe-Institut Cyprus presents its fourth edition of GoetheKino titled Questions of What Remains. In this series of film screenings and discussions, questions around the passage of time are explored from different perspectives.  Each film functions as a starting point for exchange and reflection in a relaxed setting. For the discussions we are joined by Olga Kourelou, film scholar, and an expert on the respective film subjects, creating a link to the Cyprus context.

The series begins on 23 September, during World Alzheimer’s Month, with the film A Fading Man by Welf Reinhart, a moving film about love, memory, dementia and reconciliation, made with care and humour. It tells the story of Hanne, whose ex-husband reappears, now living with dementia and unaware of their divorce, and who disrupts her orderly life. She and her partner Bernd navigate this uneasy coexistence, discovering unexpected possibilities for love and for life.

Alexia Karaiskaki Achilleos, President of The Cyprus Alzheimer and Related Dementias’ Association Larnaca, FORGET-ME-NOT, will talk about her experience through her activity at the association and shed light on victories and challenges in the local context.

 

SPEAKERS

  • Olga Kourelou

    Olga Kourelou holds PhD in Film Studies from King’s College London. Having held teaching positions at King’s College London and Sussex University, she is now Research Fellow at the University of Nicosia and an independent film curator. She served as a member of the Cyprus Cinema Advisory Committee and has now been appointed to the Subcommittee for Script Evaluation.
    Olga’s research interests are in star studies, gender, race, and European cinema, with a particular focus on Greek-language film. She has contributed book chapters and articles to publications including New Cinemas: Journal of Contemporary Film, Journal of Greek Media and Culture and Celebrity Studies Journal.  

  • Alexia Karaiskaki Achilleos

    The Cyprus Alzheimer Association & Related Dementias “FORGET-ME-NOT” was founded in 1996, with a vision to build up awareness, understanding and support for people living with dementia and their families for almost three decades. It is the only recognised member of international and European Alzheimer’s organisations in Cyprus. Today, the President of the Association is Alexia Karaiskaki Achilleos, who took over the leadership from her mother Eleni, a founding member of the Association. With respect for its history and valuable legacy, she continues its work with dedication, commitment and vision, strengthening the Association’s initiatives and services for people living with dementia, caregivers and their families.
