Sun Yat-sen University Library in Guanghzou, the National Center for Preservation and Conservation of Ancient Books of China in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Hongkong will host a another beginner training workshop in the field of paper and rare book conservation.

Since year 2009, a series of successful beginner, intermediate and advanced workshops have taken place at the SYSU National Conservation Centre. These courses were aimed at training restoration experts in China in special topics and intensifying knowledge and techniques in the conservation treatment of Western books. The paper, binding techniques and materials used in Western books are considerably different to traditional Chinese and Asian books. During those past workshops, participants familiarize with this special field.

This year, professionals of libraries, museums and archives from China, Hongkong, Macau and Korea will meet in Guangzhou to conduct special training under the leadership of German restorer and paper expert Monika Schneidereit-Gast. Ms. Schneidereit-Gast will teach for the sixth time in Guangzhou. In 2012 she was rewarded with the status of visiting professor by the National Conservation Center of Rare Books, Sun Yat-sen University, China.

During this workshop she will cover different paper conservation techniques; half and full leather sample binding; knowledge on book cover history and introduction of paper conservation and preservation in Germany, etc. Participants will be able to put hands on practical work: sample bindings of different book types and conservation treatments on original materials under guidance of an expert for Western book restoration.

Following the workshop, the South China Preservation and Conservation Forum 2015 will take place. This forum will give participants a broader view of preservation and conservation on a strategic level.  For the first time the forum can be extended to participants and contributors from the wider region in East-Asia and will offer an interregional sharing of best practice.
