Intermediation of Information Literacy as one of the Library Tasks

Seminar|Lecture of Prof. Dr. Konrad Umlauf, Humboldt-Universität Berlin

  • Guangzhou library (42 Zhongshan Four Road, 510055 Guangzhou)

Learning and its general conditions are subject to increasing change. The once commonly used resume sample "school, education, occupation, retirement" is considered by less and less people. The requirements of the individual persons for the competent utilisation of information ressources have been changed remarkably by new information technologies.
UNESCO and IFLA emphasised the education role of public libraries in 2001:
The public library should not merely provide media for learning, but should support the utilisation of learning ressources as well, thus support learning explicitly.
Besides an appropiate media supply and space plan particularly the events of information literacy offered by libraries are mainly focussed in specialized discussions in Germany.
After reviewing the current situation of German libraries and commenting on the terms "self-directed learning", "informal learning" and "information literacy", Prof. Umlauf will introduce examples, how public-, school- and university-libraries in Germany intermediate information literacy.
