Following the previous DIALOGUE on “pocket book of sound”, we maintain our curiosity with how visually- and hearing-impaired people receive and understand sound and the act of listening, so that we may continue exploring and thinking about switching between languages or senses, how sound can be described and represented, and how listening can take place. Let us access accessibility through our curiosity, and stay curious about sound and listening through accessibility.

The two upcoming DIALOGUEs will be hosted on the same day. For these, SLCO Community Resources and Rico Chan from Beyond Vision International have been invited to share their experiences on accessibility research and education.

SLCO Community Resources promotes “Sign Bilingualism” (both signed and spoken language) in communication, education, and social inclusion. What is the language system and culture of Hong Kong Sign Language? What is the sign language vocabulary available to describe sound and listening? What does acoustic sound sound like through a cochlear implant or hearing aid? How do visuality or touch enhance the imagination of sound in our daily environment?

Beyond Vision International (BVI) believes that access to visual information in the Arts, Culture, and living environment is a universal human right. Through interacting with the visually impaired and engaging in a participatory design process, BVI developed the “Tactile-Visual Vocabulary System” (TVVS) and “Tactile-Audio Interaction System” (TAIS), which allows visually-impaired people to receive visual information through tactile imaging (touching) and audio description (hearing), so they may be able to learn more independently. How do sound and listening assist visually-impaired people in the process of visualization and the building of a better mind-image?
