An initiative for children and young people with ThinkArts

Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata is delighted to be back with the fifth edition of Arts For Juniors. In a series of different and exciting activities, children and teenagers (9-12 as well as 13+ years old) can get in touch with, discover and explore the world of art, music and books. These sessions are not designed to ‘teach an art form’. Rather, they introduce children and young people to various artists and authors, let them share their ideas, spark their imagination, and encourage participants to explore their own creativity.

Till further notice, the sessions will be presented online. All you have to do is sign-up for the session by sending an e-mail to info@thinkarts.co.in. You will then soon receive a link and instructions on how to take part in the session. 

We also welcome parents who would like to participate in the session.

Number of participants is limited.

2 July - Buch-Booked - Eine Wiese für Alle / Hans-Christian Schmidt and Andreas Német
A flock of sheep, quite happy and content with their lives, are faced by a sudden dilemma. Should they be willing to give up their share to accommodate a new sheep who is in distress? Who would eventually help the sheep?
How often is help found? Let us shake hands together by discovering how often help is needed and who could provide them in the best way!

9 July - Buch-Booked- Michael Ende - The Neverending Story
Bastian Balthazar Bux is running away from his bullies when he runs into an antique bookshop. He steals a book, and ends up going on the adventure of a lifetime.

11 June - Listening Together - Clara Schumann
Clara Schumann was a child prodigy, and started touring at the age of 11! She continued to compose beautiful works throughout her life. Learn more about her compositions and her life.

18 June - Look at Art - Paula Modersohn-Becker
Famous for painting portraits of women and children, Paula Modersohn-Becker was one of the most important representatives of early expressionism. Explore the artist's life and works at this session.

25 June - Look at Art - Wassily Kandinsky
How fascinating it would be to listen to music and express the mood through painting! Kandinsky has demonstrated that style of artwork. Join the session to know more about him and his “visual music".

Maria Eichhorn, a German artist based in Berlin, is best known for site-specific works and installations that investigate political and economic systems, often revealing their absurdity . Explore the artist's life and work at this session.

7 May - Look At Art - Max Ernst
Explore Max Ernst's surrealist art - is that a sun, a moon, or a clock? And is that man in the pool diving, or drowning? Decide for yourself at this session!

14 May - Listening Together - Hildegard von Bingen
Hildegard was a poet and set her own poems to music. Join the session to listen to the monophonic music of this composer of the Medieval era.

9 April - Buch-Booked - Judith Kerr – When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit 
Set in 1933, this award winning book is a story about Anna and her brother Max as they are rushed out of Germany in alarming secrecy, away from everything they know. Join her on her huge adventure - sometimes frightening, often funny and always exciting.

16 April - Look at Art - Gabriele Münter
Münter’s artwork, ‘The Yellow House’ depicts the birthplace of the Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider group of expressionist artists). She lived there till she was 85. Explore her life and work through her colourful, expressionist landscapes and graphic portraits.

Listening Together - Georg Friedrich Händel
Georg Friedrich Händel was a German-British Baroque composer well known for his operas, oratorios, anthems, concerti grossi, and organ concertos. Even though Händel was very interested in music, his father (who was a barber and surgeon) was not. Händel's father insisted that his son become a lawyer, until the day that Händel sat down at the keyboard and dazzled a duke. The duke convinced Händel's father to let his son study music.

30 April - Buch Booked - Andreas Steinhöfel - The Spaghetti Detectives
Sometimes Rico acts a bit odd -- his mom calls him a "proddity" -- but he's GENIUS at noticing little things nobody else does. Like a string of spaghetti stuck to the sidewalk. Join Rico and Oscar on their quest to follow the noodles and find out why children in their neighborhood are going missing.

22 April evening - Wolfgang Herrndorf – Why We Took the Car
Mike doesn't have any friends and is never invited to parties. One day an odd new boy at school dares him to go on a road trip with him and everything changes. Join them on their journey at this session.

19 March - Buch-Booked - Erich Kästner – Dot and Anton 
Dot and her best friend Anton share a secret – every night, when their parents think they are asleep, they sell matches and shoelaces on the streets of Berlin with Dot’s grumpy governess. But why? Join the session to know more about these two lovely characters and the author who created them!

12 February - Listening Together - Johannes Brahms
Johannes Brahms was born in 1833 in the German city of Hamburg. His father was a musician who played several instruments. Brahms loved music, too. By the time he was six, he'd invented his own system for writing notes down on a page. Brahms also loved books and read everything he could find including novels, poetry, and folk tales. When Brahms was older, he toured as an accompanist, playing piano for a Hungarian violinist. That music --and the gypsy bands Brahms heard later on when he travelled to Hungary --inspired his Hungarian Dances, which became very popular. Many people considered Brahms to be the successor to Beethoven. For a long time, he didn't want to write a symphony, because he was afraid his work would not be as good as Beethoven's. Brahms ended up writing four symphonies, plus pieces in every musical form except opera.
