‘Returning Sound’ is a specially curated series of music programmes presented every month at the institute. The programme is curated focusing on experimental music written by independent electronic music producers.

The series is curated by Varun Desai.

The first edition of the programme series in 2023 will feature JESSOP&CO from India and Ignaz Schick from Germany.

JESSOP&CO. is a duo based in Kolkata, India, who work with music and sound to explore questions of ethnicity, regionality They advocate inclusion of the unstable and the incoherent into the sonic environment. Rigorously processed electronic music released through limited edition cassettes, SoundCloud and Bandcamp.

Ignaz Schick is a Berlin based sound and visual artist, composer/performer, turntablist/saxophonist and a curator. He also performs as an instrumentalist on turntables, objects, live-electronics, alto saxophone & flutes. His passion and interest in multitrack tape machines, record players & effect boxes drove him to start experimenting with different electro-acoustic set-ups & sound making devices. After college he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich & worked for several years as an assistant for the contemporary composer Josef Anton Riedl. Since 1995 he lives & works in Berlin where he is an active and an integral force of the so-called "Berlin Nouvelle Vague" and the blossoming "experimental" music scene.

Varun Desai
is a multi-disciplinary artist and an electronic musician as well as a computer engineer working in the field of music production and arts management. He’s been a teacher and lecturer for both hardware and software platforms, as well as a graphic designer, creative coder, video artist and instrument maker. He is the founder of Synthfarm, an annual music and technology residency and is the Director of the Kolkata Jazzfest. His company Littlei has been producing music events in Kolkata since 2007 and encourages the development of new art and music traditions.


This programme is open to all.

Entry to the programme will be on a first come first served basis till seats are full.
