Visions and Cautions about housing in the emerging Nation State

In the wake of the formation of the Nation State in 1947, there were a variety of voices both from the architectural profession and outside who expressed concerns and presented directions for the future of architecture in India. Partition and its aftermath had brought out the urgency of housing as a national priority. In this lecture we present the many concerns about housing expressed mid-century, published in the late forties and fifties. These various voices were both cautionary and visionary and provide an overview of the directions housing (and urban planning) took as a national preoccupation in the early decades of independent India.

Mustansir Dalvi is Professor or Architecture at Sir J.J. College of Architecture. He is a member of the Academic Council of the University of Mumba and the present Chair of the Board of Studies in Architectural Education of the University of Mumbai. He is on the Board of Governors of the MMRDA Heritage Conservation Society. Mustansir Dalvi has lectured, read and published several papers on architectural education, architecural history and heritage, urban transformation and architectural semiotics.
