Sultana’s Dream

Film Screening|Sister Library

  • Goethe Hall, Colombo 7

Join us for a screening of Sultana’s Dream, an animated film directed by Isabel Herguera and inspired by the visionary 1905 story by Bengali author Rokeya Sakhawat Hussain story (Spain/Germany 2023, 86 minutes). The film follows artist Inés, who lives between Spain and India. In Ahmedabad, she stumbles upon Sultana’s Dream, a book that profoundly moves her. Its story imagines Ladyland, a feminist utopia where women live freely, lead with wisdom, creativity and compassion, and men retreat into domestic life.

Drawn by this powerful vision, Inés embarks a journey across India and Bangladesh to learn more about the writer and to search for a world, where women can live in safety and dream without fear. Along the way, her perspective on her own life and the men in it begins to shift, leading her towards a deeper sense of freedom and self-discovery.
