Opening Statement: Launch of Towards Empathy

After a long period of careful preparation and a defining series of conversations, the Goethe-Institut Myanmar is pleased to announce the launch of its year-long initiative, Towards Empathy, starting this August.

Inspired by the notion of a collapsed architecture of empathy—a poetic metaphor for the fragility of human connection—this project seeks to listen, to feel, and to rebuild, recover, and excavate in times when hardships and constraints push empathy toward oblivion: when we believe in it, yet struggle to embody it fully.

Towards Empathy invites you into an experimental, process-oriented journey—open-ended, reflective, and attentive to the subtleties of human connection.
It seeks to trace the contours of what it means to feel, to listen, and to resonate with others.
How does empathy sound across Myanmar’s diverse languages?
How does it appear, move, and linger in the spaces between us?
And perhaps most urgently, how can we cultivate infrastructures of care, mend the invisible threads that tie us together, and rediscover the bonds that make a community whole?

In exploring echoes of expression, we are guided not by predefined answers, but by the search itself: a search for expression, resonance, and shared understanding.
We invite you to join this unfolding inquiry: to contribute your voice, reflections, and attentiveness as we collectively explore what it means to be in empathetic relation to one another.

Stay tuned for updates on the first steps of this process and ways to get involved.
