A music co-production by Orang Orang Drum Theatre and Angelika Niescier Trio

The co-production between Orang Orang Drum Theatre and Angelika Niescier Trio, jué shī - The Hidden Tune, is putting together a suite in eight parts by composing the material collaboratively and combine the distinctive art of drumming with jazz improvisation. This is, as of now, the first undertaking ever featuring those two genres. It brings together the very basis of jazz music, its polyrhythmic nature, and the very rich sound of the drums and percussion instruments which creates an orchestral situation.

In the process, the collaboration enlarges both musical languages and links both musical worlds together, submerging the audience into the fierce energy of improvisation as well as into the sheer power of the Chinese drumming experience.

The eight topics for the eight parts of the suite reflect on the issues of identity, systemic equality and cultural progress, which are present in both countries, and induce the outcome to be a conversation including both, European and Southeast Asian points of view, thus widening both perspectives.

Since its establishment in 2013, Orang Orang Drum Theatre’s core members Boyz Chew, Zyee Leow, and Damien Leow have been connecting music, dance, and theatre, looking for a platform of expression for drum theatre.
In recent years, they have brought their troupe to tour to many cultural and dance arts festivals in Europe, such as in France, Hungary and Serbia. Through interaction with traditional cultures, they find their balance between tradition and the contemporary. OODT also explores drum theatre as a new interdisciplinary sub-genre by combining theatrical elements, movements, narratives and multicultural values of the Malaysian society with the percussion tradition
