Ancient Polynesian seafarers used the behavior and movements of the Mwaga gannets as a navigation guide. Sydney-based German photographer Jutta Malnic captured in the 1980s the relationship between the people of a small island in the East of Papua New Guinea and the so called ‘navigator birds’.
The photography series MWAGA, A BIRD AT THE END OF THE WORLD is on display in the foyer of the Goethe Institut Wellington until the end of January 2019.
