The Goethe-Institut Philippinen is thrilled to launch the second edition of the DokuTheater Workshop—an immersive, week-long creative laboratory in the Philippines that delves into the dynamic interplay of theater, history, and archival material.

About the Workshop

The DokuTheater Workshop is in collaboration with internationally acclaimed German theater artists Regine Dura and Hans-Werner Kroesinger, pioneers of Documentary Theater, and renowned artist-curator Julian Warner, this workshop offers a rare opportunity for Filipino theater makers, artists, and cultural practitioners to explore and develop innovative performance methods rooted in real-world narratives, local histories, and community memory.

The first iteration took place in March 2024 in Lucban, Quezon. This year, we're bringing the workshop to Bohol in the Visayas, with the support of Jerrey Aguilar, one of the participants from last year’s program.

About the Facilitators

Hans-Werner Kroesinger

Hans-Werner Kroesinger, born in Bonn in 1962, is a director and is considered one of the most important representatives of documentary theater in the German-speaking world. From 1983 to 1988, he studied at the Institute for Applied Theater Studies in Giessen. While still a student, he worked as an assistant director and dramaturge for Robert Wilson from 1987 to 1989. In 1989/90, he was artistic assistant to Heiner Müller in the production of "Hamlet/Hamletmaschine" at the Deutsches Theater Berlin. He made his debut as a director in 1993. Works in recent years have dealt with topics such as the Eichmann trial, the German Autumn of 1977, the military operation in Kosovo and the history of colonialism. His work "Stolpersteine Staatstheater" at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 2016. Kroesinger has been working with Regine Dura since 2000.
Regine Dura

Regine Dura is a dramaturge and film director. She studied political science, theater, film and television studies, German studies, art education (M.A.) and video at the HdK, Berlin. She works as a documentary film director, author and dramaturge. In 2012, she made her documentary "White Blood" (ZDF/Arte) about a racist German-South African adoption company. She has been working with Hans-Werner Kroesinger as a dramaturge and author since 2000. Both deal with politically motivated violence, including the RAF, its origins and the traces it has left behind in German society. Their work "Stolpersteine Staatstheater" at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 2016.
Julian Warner

Julian Warner is a German-British curator, artist, and cultural scientist. As artistic director of the Brechtfestival Augsburg and under his musical alias Fehler Kuti, he explores the intersections of popular culture, postcolonial critique, and performative practice.
