An ancient, remote farm in the Altmark region serves as the backdrop for an epic tale about four girls and young women who live there during different eras: Alma in the 1910s, Erika in the 1940s, Angelika in the 1980s, and Nelly in the 2020s. Each of them spends her childhood or youth on the farm—and each is confronted with traces of the past that shape her personal present. Alma, for instance, discovers that she was named after her deceased sister and feels a fateful connection to her as a result; Erika develops a risky fascination with her disabled uncle, while Angelika threatens to lose her balance between a morbid longing for death and an irrepressible zest for life. The facets of these fates, in turn, haunt Nelly—who lives a sheltered life—in the form of intense dreams, and with a tragic incident on the farm, the boundaries between past and present seem to blur once and for all.
