The Goethe-Institut Chicago requests the following documents in addition to the online application:

• Cover Letter
• Resume (in German)
• Letter of recommendation (must be written by a university teacher or lecturer, should not exceed one page, should give a personal impression of your performance and briefly explain why you are suitable for an internship abroad, if applicable)

To apply for a J1 visa, you also need a written confirmation of enrollment from your university as well as a complete list of all academic achievements up to the time of application. This is required by the visa agency, it does not have to be attached to the application! Please ask your university for the following documents in English: Enrollment Verification (a confirmation from the university where you are enrolled), Transcript of Records (list of all your courses and corresponding performance assessments).


Please plan your time accordingly, as we recommend allowing for a minimum of four months to acquire the J-1 visa and secure accommodations!
