Dir.: Andreas Dresen, Germany, 2015, 117 min, German with English subtitles, DCP. Screenplay: Wolfgang Kohlhaase Cast: Julius Nitschkoff, Merlin Rose, Frederic Haselon, Ruby O. Fee, Marcel Heupermann, and Joel Basman.
Kohlhaase and Dresen’s adaptation Clemens Meyer’s 2006 multi-award-winning debut novel about a group of East German youths living in Leipzig, shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, is a cinematic parable about friendship and betrayal, hope and illusion, brutality and tenderness. Realizing that yesterday’s rules no longer apply, Rico (Nitschkoff), Dani (Rose), Paul (Haselon), Mark (Basman), Starlet (Fee), and Pitbull (Heupermann) live in the moment: they fall in love, steal cars, take drugs, open their own disco, and ultimately clash with a group of neo-Nazi skinheads.
Premiering in competition at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival, As We Were Dreaming is a captivating study of a period that is rarely explored through the lens of vérité to tell the story of a lost youth, rebellion and the search for happiness.
As We Were Dreaming is preceded by the following Short film:
