Writer-Director: Maren Ade, Germany, 2016, 162 min. German, English and Romanian with English subtitles, digital. Starring: Peter Simonschek, Sandra Hüller, Michael Wittenborn

Desperate to re-connect with his jet-setting, corporate consultant daughter Ines (Sandra Hüller), practical joker Winfried (Peter Simonischek) takes a last-minute vacation to surprise her in Romania, where she is on assignment. When his initial attempts to get his daughter’s attention go ignored, Winfried reappears, disguised as the flashy, socially awkward life-coach “Toni Erdmann.”
Wishing only to get closer to his overworked daughter, Winfried stages a series of stunts all designed to soften her ever-hardening corporate driven heart.  The father-daughter game of "cat and mouse" reaches absurd proportions, until Ines begins to see that her eccentric father deserves a place in her life.
Never melodramatic, Ade’s third feature film is a satire that mocks power games and social representation, touching upon issues such as stress in the modern world, sexism in the workplace, the dehumanizing nature of the corporate world, as well as how families fail to communicate.
