Gaming in German

How about learning German in an innovative and fun way through gaming? Discover our new afterschool programs based on award-winning games Sea of Solitude, Through the darkest of times and Anno 1800.  Programs are available to middle- and high school students from August- December 2021. Students play during the week by themselves or in a team and meet once a week with a certified German teacher for 60-90 minutes to discuss the game and learn German.

Sea of Solitude

In this intimate action-adventure game, a heartfelt tale of darkness and light, players guide Kay through her Sea of Solitude. They explore a flooded city landscape, encounter fantastical creatures and solve puzzles.

In this city-building real-time strategy video game, players create huge metropolises, plan efficient logistic networks, explore new continents and go on expeditions around the globe.

Through the Darkest of Times

In this historical resistance strategy game taking place in Berlin during the Third Reich, players coordinate a resistance group of civilians in Nazi-era Berlin. They fight for freedom, weaken the system and lead their resistance group through the darkest of times.

Q&A

The games offered in the afterschool programs (Sea of Solitude, Through the darkest of times and Anno 1800) were piloted with student groups from the US and Mexico, whose insights went into designing the programs.
Students in middle- and high schools in the US, Mexico, Central America and Europe. Students may sign up individually or teachers may sign up their entire class.
No, prior German language skills are not necessary.
The German and Gaming afterschool programs are free-of-charge. Once accepted into the programs, students are sent the game digitally- free of charge- either on the gaming platform Steam or Ubisoft Connect.
Windows system 10 and up. The games may be played either on a PC and laptop. The games will not work on Macs, Ipads or smartphones.
The program runs for 10 weeks. In the first weeks, students play the game Among us, to get acquainted with each other. Students play the games by themselves or in a group setting. They meet once a week with a Goethe-Institut certified German teacher on Zoom for 60-90 minutes to discuss the game and learn German.
Group size varies between 10-15 students.
